What's happening in Toronto for Kids?

Good morning Parents,

I hope that everyone is having a great March Break. For those of you who have decided to stay close to home, I thought I would let you know about two great websites, Toronto4kids and Canadian Family, which have a lot of information about events and attractions that are happening in the city for kids. Also, you will find information on fun activities and crafts that you can do with children at home. Have a safe and enjoyable break.

All the best,
Mrs. Mulone

The 11th Hour Video

Hello Students,

Wow, I found a really great trailer that I want to share with you all. It was produced and narrated by Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and it ties nicely with what we have been discussing in Science class: the need to stop the depletion of the Earth's non-renewable resources. We have been talking about topics such as recycling (reduce, reuse, recycle), sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint on Earth. Please put aside a few minutes to watch this short video, and take note of some of the issues addressed and ways in which we can make changes. I want us to have a class discussion about this once we return from March Break.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Mulone

The Value of Money

Hello Students,
I found a great poem by Shel Silverstein entitled "Smart". I would like everyone to read the poem and come to class prepared to discuss it. After reading the poem try to answer the following questions:

Did the boy in the poem know money values?
What was wrong with his logic?
Did the boy in the poem get a good deal?
How much money did he lose?

I think you will find this poem provides a great lesson about the importance of knowing the value of money. Enjoy!
Mrs. Mulone

Smart
My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny
quarters
'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he don't know
That three is more than two!
Font size
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head--
Too proud of me to speak!
- Shel Silverstein

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and that you had an opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the wonderful weather we had. As you all know, Earth Day is approaching soon. In Science class we have been discussing the impact of society’s consumption of our non-renewable resources and have been looking at ways in which we can reduce those impacts. I would like you all to come up with 3 ways that you would like to reduce your impact on the environment and be prepared to share them with the rest of the class. Make sure to check out the following link EcoKids, which has some useful information to help get you started towards reducing your carbon footprint. National Geographic Kids also has a fun and interactive game that you can play called "Recycle Roundup" which will put your recycling skills into practice. While visiting their website make sure to read up on some of the handy green tips they have about conservation and recycling. See you soon!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mulone

Adding and Subtracting Money Review

Quiz - Don't Forget!

This is a friendly reminder to all students that we will be having a Math quiz on Thursday. It will be a review of what we have been working on the last few classes – adding and subtracting of money. I was so pleased to see how enthusiastic everyone was about this lesson and how you all participated in our simulated classroom corner store. Everyone really grasped the importance of understanding the value of money. I am confident that all of you will do great on the quiz. I will see you in class tomorrow.

Mrs. Mulone

(p.s. For those of you who would like a bit more practice please go to Math Playground for some challenging fun and interactive money games.)

Field Trip to the Royal Ontario Museum

Dear Parents and Students,

This will serve as a reminder that our class will be taking a trip to The Royal Ontario Museum on Wednesday, March 24th to see the new bat cave exhibit as a part of our unit in Science on animal habitats. Please ensure that permission forms are signed and returned with admission money no later than this coming Friday. I am looking for two parent volunteers who would like to attend this excursion. If you are interested please respond to me as soon as possible. Volunteers will be selected on a first come, first served basis. This should be a fun and educational experience for your children.

Students, please set aside some time to visit the following two websites: Bats4Kids and National Geographic Kids. They contain a lot of useful information about bats that is not only informative but a helpful addition to what we have been discussing in class. Please jot down a few new insights that you discover as you explore these two sites and please be prepared to share with the rest of the class. Thank you.
Best regards,
Mrs. Mulone
